How to Join

Join the Search....

STAR 1 is always seeking new members, who are volunteer oriented. Search is a demanding task as are training requirements. Prospective members need to pass a background check and be at least 18 years old. Searchers must be able to operate outdoors in a wide range of conditions.

Star Team members are trained and become certified in accordance with the standards of the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR). All members are certified as SAR Tech IIs or SAR Tech IIIs (Ground Search Technicians) and have completed relevant ICS and NIMS Courses.

If this interests you, look at the New Member Information and New Member Requirement documents.  Most important 'Contact Us' . Send us your contact data and other relevant information about your interests and experience. Check us out at one or two of our monthly training sessions (you will need to sign a liability waiver). Then you can apply and start working on your membership requirements.

We train monthly in central Iowa, normally on the 3rd Saturday every month.  Times and locations vary. Regular training includes search strategies, clue awareness, crime scene preservation, search management, and night operations. All members are encouraged to continue their SAR education through recognized training programs, evaluations and seminars.

If you want to be a dog handler or a member of our mounted team. There are additional requirements for you and your animal.

Not ready to join?    Be a search subject.

STAR 1 Search and Rescue has an ongoing need for search subjects for our training exercises. The subject ‘disappears’ as directed by the exercise coordinator.  The subject should plan to be ‘missing’ for a few hours. Usually, the subject stays in one location and has some communication with the exercise coordinator. Some enjoy the alone time as an opportunity to read or otherwise enjoy the outdoors.

Let us know you are interested on the 'Contact Us' page. Select 'Search Subject' as the type of message.
