train for and can be certified in the following search specialties:
| Area Search | a person is lost and there is no PLS (point last seen) from which to start the K9 Search Teams |
| Wilderness and Urban Trailing | a person is lost and there is a PLS (point last seen) and scent article from which to start the K9 Search Teams |
| Water Search | a drowned person is located from boat or shore |
| Wilderness Cadaver Search | a lost person is believed to be deceased |
| Forensic Human Remains Detection (HRD) | human remains, possibly related to a crime, or accident need to be located |
| First Responder Disaster (collapsed structure) Live Search | a live person is trapped in a collapsed structure |
| First Responder Disaster (collapsed structure) Cadaver Search | a deceased person is in a collapsed structure |
| Evidence/Article Search | an object, related to a crime, needs to be located |
Before they can certify with their K9, STAR 1 Canine Handlers must first qualify as Ground Searchers.
STAR 1 uses NASAR's canine certification standards for area search, trailing, human remains detection and first responder disaster (live and cadaver) and has developed rigorous testing procedures for any specialites not identified.
STAR 1 has also developed evaluation procedures to aid handlers in assessing a K9's suitability for SAR training.
Training & Public Events
